It is hard to believe that the Yanks might be going through a youth movement, but they might be a very young team next year. Arod has the right to opt out of his current contract and with Boras as his agent, it is likely to happen. With Arod on the open market, who knows where he will end up. Abreu is a free agent at the end of the season, as is Posada and Rivera. Pettitte has a player option deciding whether he will play again next year. Clemens is obviously gone at the end of the year, maybe ready to be courted at midseason.
I believe that Arod will be elsewhere, and that the Yanks will spend the money to get Rivera and Posada to return. If I am right about that, here is what the Yanks might look like in 2008:
C- Posada
DH- Giambi
1B- Phillips
2B- Cano
SS- Jeter
3B- Betemit
LF- Matsui
CF- Cabrera
RF- Damon/Duncan
SP- Wang, Pettitte, Hughes, Chamberlin, Mussina (DaSalvo, Clippard, Igawa)
RP- Rivera, Ramirez, Henn, Farnsworth, Bruney, Vizcaino, Karstens, Rasner

I'm just not convinced I can see the Yankees lining themselves to look like this for Opening Day 2008. I really think they're going to make a hard push to re-sign A-Rod. Also, I'm not sure how hard they are going to go after Mo. I think Cashman might be frustrated how he doesn't want to talk until the season's over. If they can re-sign 3 of the 4 that will be free agents (Abreu, A-Rod, Posada, Rivera), and as long as 1 of the 3 is Jorge, they'll be in great shape. As for the platoon guys this year (Phillips, Betemit, Duncan, Damon, Giambi), things could go a number of different ways. I really just can't see the Yanks really on Phillips as the main-stay 1B, and Betemit as the starting 3B, with Duncan relied heavily upon in RF if he's platooning with the injury-plagued Damon. I'm having a tough time getting to where I exactly disagree with your 2008 team, because so much is up in the air. I just think one more "solid starter" (Abreu, A-Rod, etc.) will be in the mix. I do strongly agree with your pitching rotation though, with the huge question mark around Mussina and the other 3. Who will step up? Will Moose even be as effective as he has been this year? (8-8, mid to high-4.00's ERA) I think its straight downhill from here for Moose. I hope Clippard can step it up. It is scary to think what Joba the Hutt will do as a starter!
